Everything you need to know before your trip to Kyrgyzstan

Yes. Some areas of Kyrgyzstan that are close to the Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, or China borders require a Kyrgyz Border Zone Permit. These permits are necessary for visiting certain trekking routes and high-mountain regions. For example, if you plan to trek to Lenin Peak Base Camp or travel through parts of the southern Pamir–Alay Mountains, you officially need a border zone permit. Approximate costs: * €15 — Regular application (1–3 weeks) * €30–€50 — Expedited processing (1–3 days) Pamir Nomad – Permit Included If you travel with Pamir Nomad, we handle the entire permit process for you. For all tours that require a border permit, it is included in the tour price.

Yes, Kyrgyzstan is generally a very safe country for travelers. Violent crime in tourist areas is extremely rare, and locals are known for their hospitality and willingness to help. Like in any country, small incidents such as pickpocketing can happen, so basic precautions are recommended. The best time to visit Kyrgyzstan is from late May to late September, when the weather is warm and mountain passes are open. For high-altitude trekking and horse-riding tours, July and August are ideal due to stable weather and long daylight hours.

In summer (June–August), daytime temperatures in the mountains are around 20–25°C. The sun is strong, so sunglasses and sunscreen are essential. Nights can be cold, especially at high altitude, dropping to around 5°C. Rain is rare, but mountain weather can change quickly. Layered clothing and proper gear are important.

Kyrgyz cuisine is deeply rooted in nomadic traditions and is rich in meat-based dishes. Lamb, beef, and horse meat are most common. Popular traditional dishes include: * Beshbarmak * Lagman * Plov * Manty * Samsa * Ashlyan-fu * Shashlik * Kuurdak * Boorsok * Chalap Special Meals at Our Yurt Camp At the Pamir Nomad yurt camp, we serve unique mountain dishes made from fresh local ingredients, including Habib's signature dish, available only at our camp.

Yes. Vegetarian and vegan food is easy to find, especially in cities and tourist areas. Vegetarian options include: * Salads and soups * Pumpkin manty * Potato dishes * Lentil soups * Tandyr bread and dairy products Best cities for vegetarian food: * Bishkek * Osh
